Trainspotting in Wales

This classic GWR lower-quadrant semaphore signal stands guard over the Aberystwyth yard limits.  When Great Western assumed control of the Cambrian Railways in 1922, the new management initiated a program of replacing as many of the Cambrian signals as possible with new semaphores built to GWR's own distinctive design.  Historian C.C. Green records that old Cambrian hands immediately noted the spiky lightning rod atop the GWR signals: "Oh yes," they remarked, "the Great Western men need the ornaments to show them which way to plant the posts!"
