Talyllyn: The World's First Preserved Railway

frame.JPG (42293 bytes)

Interior of the ground frame cabin at Pendre.  Using these levers ("Armstrong" levers in the wry American phrase, for the strength of limb required to pull them) the switchman controls all the turnouts and signals in the Pendre yard complex.  The levers are mechanically interlocked so as to prevent the operator from lining two trains into the same route, or giving a proceed signal to a train which does not in fact have a clear route set through the switches.    Photo courtesy of Richard Huss.
