| In Pennsylvania Railroad #7002, the Strasburg found the perfect stablemate for its tall American. In 1905, the original #7002 astonished the world when she achieved the ballast-scorching speed of 127.1 miles per hour on a special record-breaking run. Sadly, the genuine #7002 was scrapped, but in 1948 a regretful PRR quietly altered a similar Atlantic to stand in for the missing record-holder. Though something of an imposter, the "new 7002" still superbly evokes the days when the century was young, and a high-drivered Atlantic was a byword for speed. |
