The Last Coal Road

#14 backs her train through the north leg of the Colgate Grove wye. This leg of the wye was originally laid down sometime before 1919 to serve a clay pit located east of the EBT mainline atop Sandy Ridge. The clay was lowered down the slope of the ridge on a gravity-propelled funicular railway, and then dumped into EBT gondolas spotted on the spur. The pit was not a great commercial success, and the spur rails were lifted sometime around 1930. Following the success of EBT's inaugural season of excursion service in 1960, the spur was relaid and a new connecting arm built to provide a turning facility at the north end of the operating line.
